In the year of Kesha’s comeback and Lady Gaga’s reinvention, the Grammy Awards have decided to make 2018 the year of Jay-Z.

The rapper and music mogul received eight nominations, including record of the year, song of the year, rap performance, rap album and the coveted album of the year.

The freshly released 4:44 is the first album in Jay’s 21-year career nominated for the main category.

He will be fighting for the top prize against big names such as Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars and relative newcomers like Childish Gambino and Lorde.

Lorde is the only female act nominated for the main prize, while record of the year has only five men competing for the gong.

Among the biggest snubs is to Ed Sheeran, who failed to get even one nomination in the main categories for his album Divide.

The same goes for Taylor Swift’s single Look What You Made Me Do, although her album Reputation will be eligible for the 2019 Grammys due to its late release.

Kesha and Lady Gaga, who have both recently reinvented their artistic persona, Gaga as a country singer and Kesha as a more serious pop artist, have been left out of the nominations.

Katy Perry’s new album Witness was also snubbed.

The least surprising nomination goes to Kendrick Lamar’s heavily praised album Damn – widely expected to sweep the main categories.

All in all, it is a great year for hip hop, with both Lamar and Jay ruling, and Childish Gambino – AKA Atlanta star Donald Glover – proving a heavy competitor.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was also a good year for Luis Fonsi, whose summer hit Despacito made it to the song of the year category.

In the alternative music category, Arcade Fire’s divisive Everything Now will go against Gorillaz “end of the world” dance album Humanz and Father John Misty’s ironically layered compilation Pure Comedy.
